In November of 2012, The University of Colorado (at Co Springs) held a competition to design a four-story concrete; 1,227 car parking garage topped by a 240'x360' artificial turf recreational field overlooking Pikes Peak. The site is located on a very prominent intersection of the campus gateway and is surrounded by a challenging landscape and a preserved archeological zone. We won the competition by recessing the garage into the ground as much as the site could allow it, to preserve views from the adjacent student housing buildings and to hide the exposed elevation of the garage as much as possible. The design proposed gateways that connected to the campus pedestrian spine; as well as upper seating to partake in the attendance of multi-sports events. The building has been carefully oriented to accommodate the current alignment of the existing roads, the pedestrian spine, the Pikes Peak view, the preservation of the Archeological Zone and the aesthetic development of any game in consideration with the solar orientation
